Three Magical Ways to Embrace Spring

I don’t know about you, but I’m finding it very tricky to stay inside or even concentrate on work these days. I should be answering emails, but instead I’m gazing outside at the purple irises that are blossoming daily in every corner of the yard like quiet fireworks. As soon as I close a video call, I burst out the front door to stand in the sunlight and feel the breeze on my skin. I have (for now) abandoned my amazing loft office for a makeshift spot in the veranda, with the door wide open, of course.

It’s official: Winter is gone, spring is digging in its heels and the first whispers of summer are arriving on the fragrant breeze. Nature is expressing growth and movement in every way it knows how, and we–being part of nature ourselves, obviously–are swept away in its colorful madness. We might feel more enthusiastic and and inspired in our daily pursuits, and likely everyone you know is also showing signs of this wonderfully manic springtime energy: Calendars fill up, plans are made and suddenly canceled. Everything changes in an instant.

Most of the time, this wacky frenzy is fun and exhilarating. However, there can also be a fine line, sometimes, between too much and just enough. So, the question becomes: How do we stay grounded when all we want to do is fly? Life is, as I’ve mentioned before, a dance of balance, and every season period of life will test our equilibrium–spring included.

Below are three quick, easy and grounding antidotes I’ve created to help you soak up the magic of spring without losing your mind. To allow you to be romanced by the promise of spring with your feet firmly planted in the bright green grass. You don’t need much for each one, just a bit of time and a few supplies that are listed under each of the practices.

  1. Joyful Sprouting Tarot Spread
    • You will need: Your favorite Tarot or Oracle deck, a pen and some paper or a notebook
    • Let’s begin:
      1. Choose a quiet spot, perhaps even outside in the sun, where you can focus without distraction.
      2. Shuffle your deck, thinking about the energy of spring and everything you have going on.
      3. Cut the deck
      4. Draw four cards for the following questions:
        1. What in my life is out of balance?
        2. How can I bring it back into equilibrium?
        3. Where am I being asked to direct more energy?
        4. Where am I getting a bit too carried away?
  2. Natural Wisdom Practice
    • You will need: A spot outside where there is a plant or two (or more), a pen and paper
    • Let’s begin:
      1. Go out into your garden, onto the patio or into the forest. Connect with your senses. What do you see? Hear? Smell?
      2. Tune into the non-human beings around you–the plants, trees, flowers. Which one calls to you? It might be a sensation, a tingle, or just a feeling.
      3. Go to this plant, and write down everything you can about it–where and how it grows, its color, texture, smell, its energy. Just don’t eat it if you’re not 100% sure it’s not poisonous!!
      4. Research this plant online and see what else you can learn about it.
      5. You and this plant met for a reason. What could it be? What can you learn from it? What might it be showing you? Take as much time as you need to marinate on this.
      6. Thank the plant out loud, by taking care of it, or sprinkling it with dried herbs or a bit of beer or milk.
  3. Life is a Beautiful Bouquet Spell
    • You will need: a pen and paper, 15-20 minutes (or more), and a field of wildflowers/flowers from the store or farmer’s market, a vase to put them in
    • Let’s begin:
      1. Sit down and write down the things you would like to manifest this year. At the end, count how many things are on your list.
      2. Go outside (or to the store or farmer’s market) and collect one flower for each of your manifestations.
      3. When you have enough, go inside and place them in a vase.
      4. As you add water (and a copper penny, which will help them last longer!) picture them growing and blooming into fulfilled dreams.
      5. Fold up your manifestations and place them underneath the vase.
      6. Keep the vase where you can see it so you will be reminded of the things you are growing.
      7. Last, choose your favorite flower and let it be your most precious goal for the year. Before it wilts, take it from the vase and hang it in a place you pass often. Let it be a reminder to make choices and actions to support your goal each day of the year.
